CMS

There are numerous CMS’ (Content Management Systems) that are available to users, from the novice to the most advanced and everything in between. Here is a quick rundown of some of the major ones.

WordPress was born in Houston, TX and is one of my personal favorites. It originated as a blogging tool however it has grown into a very function and expandable CMS. In order to get a site up and running it takes little to no html knowledge however if you know how to code PHP then there are a ton of advanced features that open to you. The current version of www.susprod.com is running on WordPress.

MODX is much more intensive that WordPress and does require the user to have quite a few development skills in order to set it up however once it is setup it relies 100% on the code that you put into it. Some other CMS’ require you to hack your way through the system if you want to make an entire web application or something of that nature. MODX is a great tool because it leaves the developer in complete control of what happens.

CMS Sample: Here is an example that I made that takes a site design and I put it into MODx. Click here for the same site but in WordPress. I do plan on adding on more to that site in order to demonstrate a bit of what the different CMS’ are capable of doing and the different values each of them have.

Some of the other ones that are commonly known are Drupal, Expression Engine, and Joomla. There are also some smaller, lesser known systems such as Feed.us but that doesn’t mean they are low in features.

I try to make sure all sites I create use one of those CMS’ however I specialize in WordPress and MODx. I can take a design and turn it into a custom theme for WordPress or a custom template in MODx.

If you would like some help in getting your designs properly integrated with WordPress or MODX contact me.
